Biobehavioral Laboratory hosts DNA and RNA applications workshop series
During the months of September and October the UNC Biobehavioral Lab (BBL) hosted a seminar series on “Integrating Genomics and Transcriptomics into Nursing Behavioral & Health Sciences Research”. The two-session workshop were led by Field Application Scientists from Thermo Fisher Scientific. About 40 attendees participated in the sessions, that concentrated on basic concepts and applications of DNA and RNA technologies available to UNC investigators at the BBL. Attention Undergraduate Students!!! Summer Research Fellowship Opportunity at the BBL
The Biobehavioral lab is looking for students interested in applying to the American Physiological Society (APS) Summer Research Fellowship program. The program allows students to participate in hands-on research in the laboratory for 10 weeks in the summer (dates June 1-July 31, 2020). Fellows receive a $4,000 stipend and travel expenses (up to $1,300 for domestic students and up to $1,800 for international students) to attend the APS annual meeting at Experimental Biology. Biobehavioral Laboratory Hosts First North Carolina Biobuilder Workshop
From July 10 to 12, the UNC Biobehavioral Lab (BBL) hosted eleven high school and college educators for the first North Carolina Biobuilder Workshop. The hands-on synthetic biology workshop was led by BBL Director Dr. Patricia Silveyra and Joanne Bartsch, a Science Teacher and Science Department Chair at Carolina Day School. During the three-day workshop, attendees participated in discussions about synthetic biology, which involves engineering biological systems for new uses, as well as genetic engineering, biotechnology and bioethics. BBL Welcomes New Director
This fall, associate professor and Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Term Scholar Dr. Patricia Silveyra was appointed director of the Biobehavioral Lab. It’s been a busy semester for Dr. Silveyra and her team — they welcomed another new team member, research specialist Dr. Chongben Zhang, and launched a new website for the lab. Silveyra joined the SON from Penn State University, where she started her career as basic and translational science researcher.
